Your Unique Alloy

Everyone of us is an alloy of morals, principals, and emotions. We are the mixture of our life experiences! The most important thing in an alloy is its uniqueness, it is such as your fingerprint.
Scientifically speaking, alloy is the mixture of a basic metal and additional elements which leads to new properties because of the changes happening among the atoms. You are an alloy, and connecting with a different person's alloy creates a new alloy with new characteristics.

Alloy was the theme of this year's TEDxGUC event, the fifth annual event. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design. The x in TEDx stands for an independently organized event by a licensed team. And their slogan is "Ideas worth spreading". And simply this event was full of ideas that are worth spreading.

TEDx talks are not meant to help you break the walls & fly reaching your dreams. But, TEDx talks are meant to create ideas whether those ideas are positive or negative. Those ideas should encourage you to think.

There are two theories regarding the Alloy concept were discussed during the hosting of the event by Kareem Helmy:

  1. The "Salad Bowl" theory, where people keep their own basic beliefs while adapting to the general characteristics of the culture. Here, you can easily pinpoint the different components although everything is altogether in one salad bowl.
  2. The "Melting Pot" theory, where people conform to the mainstream culture. Here, you can't pinpoint the different component with your bare eye.
And now, I will share with you the main ideas that are worth spreading:
  1. Homeschooling is the way to help your children to discover their inner self & live their own journey. With homeschooling, you can easily help children in crisis to cope with other students their age. Even if they left school for some years. This is what Rana Maaty has done to make a difference in the lives of the Syrian refugees by her NGO. This talk for me was full of hope, giving a helping hand to the Syrian refugees by educating the children.
  2. What goes around comes around! Plastic pollution is affecting us all. Plastic goes to the sea & Fish do feed on them, and as a result we do eat the Fish with the plastic. Moreover, the plastic we do consume indirectly through the Fish we do eat is poisonous. One of the main things you can do to help in this crisis is to limit our plastic consumption & clean the beaches from the plastic trash to save the Fish. This is what Nada Shanawany, tried to spread around. This talk was alarming for me, next time I will be alerted to minimize my plastic consumption.
  3. Dr. Yehia Abou Gabal has shared with us the importance of the Academic Research in fighting cancer. Moreover, the investment in Academic Research has more return than saving this money in the bank. For me this talk was a new way to investment money & help cure people.
  4. Dr. Sara Abd El Aziz has shared with us her research regarding the side-effects of chemotherapy. One of the major side-effects of chemotherapy is the Premature Ovarian Failure, and based on her research on Mice, stem cells can help in repairing the damage. For me, this talk is spreading hope.
  5. Youssef Farag, has shared a new architecture approach. Building by using containers. This architecture approach benefits in building nice buildings that are mobile. From my point of view, this was one of the best ideas shared this year.
  6. Yasser Ayoub, has shared his idea that sports basically depend on genes. This explains why White people do excel in swimming, and black people do excel in running. And raised the issue that in Egypt we should focus on different sports than Football. From my own point of view, this talk was racist.
  7. Reem Hachem, she is curing children through Drama therapy. Drama therapy is a curing method to cure ADHD, anxiety, and a collection of negative habits. This talk was nice, to teach my children through drama how to act good.
  8. Salsabeel Amin, she was able to deal with the Egyptian craftsmen to design her products. Along with working with the Egyptian craftsmen, she has her own studio where she creates her own pieces to meet her standards. I loved her dedication to follow her passion.
  9. Omar Sabaa, is contributing in the sustainable development in the south of the Red Sea by cofounding his NGO. Focusing mainly on energy, water supply, sustainable housing, waste management, and economic development. This talk helps in discovering the hidden Egyptian gems.
  10. Caroline Mitry, she has researched the Egyptian cinema and how our cinema is showcasing the mental illness. She has studied a variety of movies, coming up with how those movies are misleading. For me, she has pinpoints to things clarifying that mental illness is far from what we have seen on the screens.
  11. Rasha Sayed, she has discovered a way to discover the heart attack in 2-3 hours instead of the well known tests that takes up to 6 hours and may lead either to dangerous side effects or death. For me, the most important thing is making this test applicable in the ambulance to help save lives.

Those 11 talks left me speechless. I had that feeling that I need to think deeper and come up with my idea one day & stand on the magical red circle to share my idea that is worth spreading.
This event encouraged me to discover my alloy!
